He has been a great servant to the cause and he was the primary force behind the lads winning the FA cup in 2006 and The Champs league the year previously ( I think Didi/Kaizer was hugely significant also!)!
But Stevie if you wisg to continue playing the time has come to move on to a less exacting league!
Actually, going back a few decades a few greats of the English game played LOI on retirement from serious footy!
BTW famous Stevie G story, he almost had a foot amputated as a 12 year old due to an injury sustained from kicking a ball from a broken bottle while having a kick around in the park!

It's entirely understandable that at this stage of his career that he should want to experience a new challenge. Playing in the U.S. would provide that opportunity while protecting his legacy at Liverpool.
Fair play to him, it must have been a tough decision to make; leaving the club after so long. He's given so much to LFC over the years, he'll always be a legend at Anfield.
