I just read through the same article. You've quoted the one single sentence that seems unfavorable , but even that simply

said that they are perceived to be such and such sacrilegious etc.

How about this snippet ! >>

"In Russia feminism is seen as something "that could destroy Russia" as said by Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.[45] Pussy Riot are important to the feminist movement and showcase that post-feminism has not been achieved."

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pussy_Riot

*im just having a bit of fun xx

On February 21, 2012, as part of a protest movement against the re-election of Vladimir Putin, five women from the group entered the Cathedral of Christ the Savior of the Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow. There was no church service in session at the time, and only a few people were in the cathedral.[61] Removing their winter clothes, they put on colorful balaclavas, walked up the steps leading to the altar, and began to jump around, punching the air.[62] After less than a minute, they were escorted outside the building by guards.[63] Film of the performance was later combined with footage shot at a different church,[64] identified by Russian Orthodox Church spokesman Vsevolod Chaplin as the Epiphany Cathedral in Yelokhovo,[65] to create a video clip for the song, which they entitled "Punk Prayer: Mother of God Drive Putin Away".[6]

See , I have no like nor dislike for the guy. He actually strikes quite a handsome pose half naked on a horse's back lol !!

I don't care for his tactics. Intimidation and strong arm politics. Forcefully eliminating any and all opposition ,

assassinating dissenters even on foreign land , etc.

I think it is rather naive to think 'it was the voters who put him there'.

I don't think you're this naive , I think you're just making interesting conversation xx

Is that the only Putin policy you do not condone ?

As to the graph -- it's pretty. Has nice colors :

    Hi Stephanie.

Yes, I was being deliberately selective to make a point. The fact that the Wikipedia article only had that one line should bolster the point, ie, how little we know of what the actual Russians themselves think of the Pussy Riot incident.

An article from Forbes titled "What do the Russians think about 'Pussy Riot'?, the answer might surprise you":

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/markadom...-surprise-you/

A breakdown of the general consensus:

Considering the large roll the Russian church had to play in this I find the follow set of stats very telling.

Again, the opinion of the Russian people. But we seem to be willing to ignore this. Why is that if not selective myopia?

I picked the Pussy Riot incident out of your post because it's been a personal peeve of mine for a while. I actually do think the trial and sentencing were an appalling fiasco, regardless of my opinion on the band and their theatrics. The 'vandals of church property' remark is not mine ( Russian public opinion, however misguided ). But I don't hold Komrade Putin personally responsible though, he's just playing to his audience. It's the audience that concerns me.

I think it is rather naive to think 'it was the voters who put him there'.

    I don't think you're this naive
You're right, I'm not that naive. But let's be realistic, you won't get very far in Russian politics playing by American political principles (not exactly the ideal paragon either). Russian politics haven't resembled anything palatable since Gorbachev. And look where that got them. Putin's main opposition are communists and oligarchs, very ugly bedfellows. The Russian people get it bad whichever way you look at it, it comes down to who is the lesser of the evils. Show me somebody in that particular circle that stands out as someone the west can get behind and, well ... nah, I know you're not that naive either Stephanie.

I think you're just making interesting conversation xx
Devil's advocate, mea culpa. Or perhaps I like my rulers shirtless on horseback too

Regarding the poverty margins and their comparison. The graph I linked is a CIA affair representing stats based on national poverty line indexes which takes into account the value of a dollar "deemed adequate in a particular country".

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poverty_threshold

There's always room in these kinds of stats to make it fit our agendas but the Russian winters have been a lot warmer for a lot more people since the rise of Komrade Putin.

I like your graph, where did you get it? I have a friend in the CIA who wants to know ...

But RT differs from the others in that you'll rarely if ever seen them criticise the russian government.

Which is a shame really because they do provide a counterpoint that is blatantly missing in western propaganda. Much like Aljazeera do.

Their handling of Abby Martin's outburst was outrageously stupid and reeked to the heavens of censorship.

    Yeah, but who cares? Seriously.
