I'm not sure if it is an age thing or what, but I don't find that awkward at all. Sometimes I'll say something like. 'I forgot to use my mouthwash, shall we do it together?' That's kind of inclusive. Other times I may say, 'ah I can tell you're a smoker, do you mind using mouth wash?' and they never do mind. I suppose it's all about the delivery and I'll also mention how much I love kissing and that can certainly help motivate.
