Wellies. Short for Wellington boot.
They were invented by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, as ideal footwear for soldiers.
Originally, they were thigh high leather Hessian boots.
This "Wellington" boot became popular hunting and outdoor wear for the British aristocracy in the early 19th century.
Later, a cheaper version was marketed for farmers and other outdoor workers, made from rubber.
Cheaper version, wellies, hardly your style Sophie
