When I moved from the UK to Ireland, I could have chosen to adopt a different personality with all the new people I was meeting. I could have been an axe murderer for all they knew.
Or is the personality I adopt with my colleagues in the office different from the one I may have when I am relaxed socialising with my friends?
Do you remember a film a few ago called The Illusonist? Wasn't the point of that movie that two identical twins could pass themselves off as each other?
everyone to some extend in the real world adopts a mask. Freud said society is repressed because there is a difference between what a man wants to do and what he does do. The difference is down to compromise because in order to achieve in life he must behave a certain way. People talk about "selling yourself" to retrospective employers. In reality they mean prostitute yourself to the will of others because one has compromise their ideals to gain employment. we are all prostitutes. we all must adopt personas to enable others and we gain then financially or emotionally or sexually or some way
So I am not sure that knowing someone's appearance is a fail safe way of knowing their identity.
Very interesting topic though, how do we ever truly know the identity or personality of those we are interacting with, on here or anywhere else for that matter?
Philip k dick once said that if thought crime ever came into effect everyone would be in jail. Even if like you say you know someone by name and face, you can never know what goes on in their mind (although their internet browsing history is as good a barometer as any).
But there is one subtle difference between this forum and down in the pub lets say. Because down in the pub one is aware that ones name and face is known, psychologically the mind is more aroused.
also an argument breaks out here nearly every two days. that is because one is aware they are anonymous. Down in a pub that will not happen because one will get a bad reputation.
That is why one cannot read too much into forums. On the other hand though a forum is a good place to see the real person.
Wilde said: give a man a mask and you will see him for what he really is. But its all irrelevant because i dont know the full identity of the poster in question
Imagine for instance if a paper couldnt name and shame criminal(s). So there was no picture and no name. You just call him CRIM-024. reading the stories would be futile. "CRIM-024 killed his friend" your mind wouldnt attribute seriousness to the story. When the mind knows the name and face it becomes aroused and its attention is caught.
To sum it up: one should never take anything personal on a forum. I use this forum like i use the daily mail, to pass the time
