Maybe it's normal these days but not in my time. I don't think I ever had a conversation with him in sixteen years. My mother was dead and I don't remember her at all. And as for the whole step mother thing, all I can say is if anybody has kids they shouldn't be allowed remarry. Needless to say I don't have children myself and wouldn't dream of having any.
But I know some people who can chat away with their kids and it's wonderful to see, even if it also makes me sad.
