I am sorry, but not sure if understood how does it work? and how does it relate to using the TOR which is not illigal; illigal is buying illigal stuff using Silk Road or Agora, so far as I know

I am kinda paranoid if it's going about my online identity. I have predicted NSA thing 2 years before Snowden has appeared with his revelations. So far, I have been doing good protecting myself. I wouldn't use the same hardware going into my private email or FB, while advertising as an escort. If there is no other way - then I'd use TOR for this or that. Nothing illigal, though.
I would support TOR however, as long as there are attempts to lurk into my private life without my consent. I know, I am not able to be completely anonymous, but at least I can make it more difficult.
I do not have even Tesco Clubcard, because I am so annoyed by this type of practice: they make you believe, it is to your benefit, but in the reality you giving them for free well worth information, which is sold further without you even knowing it. I rarely use GPS on my phone. Plenty of habits like that, small things, but so far it works for me.

The TOR project provides anoniminity on the net, You are less likely to have your movements tracked by advertisers or scammers. Or organisations such as google, which seem to want to poke their noses into every aspect of our lives.
