No but from my POV, teenager in 1980s West Of Ireland in bottom 10% poverty, it would have been worse than the East Germany or anywhere in urban Czechoslovakia or urban Hungary of the time! It was also very much to sex what North Korea is to human rights!

As long as you obeyed their admittedly insane rules, you would be allright and unlike in the North Korea of sex, you could get laid! You had access to Western TV and good weather and a chance of getting a job and the women weren't encouraged to look like the back of a dog's hole! They also had some good sports 'people', admittedly manufactured!
