I think you probably can. My first time really helped my confidence and anxiety and I feel I am in process of really changing my life now, thanks to that one person who has changed my life for the better.

I knew I guy I worked for for a couple of years. I moved on to another job, but still in the same sector. We went for lunch on a regular basis. We talked and laughed about everything, family work politics blah blah. This went on on a regular basis for the best part of a decade. Best of friends ?

No - the day he retired he went off to play golf. I have never seen him since. Nor did I expect to. We were work colleagues, friendly, but not friends.

In all aspects of our commercial life, we engage with some people in a business like fashion and some in a friendly fashion. None of them are our friends.

Apply the same distinction here, I suggest.

Whenever I am asked about friends I have my reply is always " I have lots and lots of acquaintances , but very few people I would consider true friends "

My true friends I could count on one hand.

Friends does not have to be forever. You are still friends.

As so often, a debate comes down to a difference of meanings. So we are all correct.
