Depends of the language really, some are more difficult than other.
on average it takes 5/600 hours to learn most of them. Some are more difficult like French which takes about 800 hours. Than you have the challenging ones which take 1000+ hours to learn like Arabic and finally the truly difficult ones at 1500 hours like Japanese or Korean(the most difficult one of all).

I'm like Kate no amount of learning will do I'm just not able to remember any of it? Maybe audio cds playing would help but then that wouldn't help with the reading and writing side of it?for the average person I'd say it would take years rather than months
It does depend on the person and how much time you can dedicate to it,
I was taught some French at school so did know a little before i started took me I'd say 3 and half years (i dont think im dumb) in all then I took up Spanish which took me nearly 2 years. Its all down to the amount of effort you are willing to put in I think.
