(CNN) -- Outrage over the reported discovery of the bodies of almost 800 children at a former home for unmarried mothers run by nuns in Ireland prompted calls Wednesday for a full investigation.

The children whose remains have apparently been found in Tuam, in County Galway, are believed to have died between 1925 and 1961, according to local media reports.

The grim discovery was highlighted in a front-page report in the Irish Mail on Sunday, which cited the efforts of local historian Catherine Corless to research the burial sites of 796 children listed as having died at the home, which was run by the Sisters of Bon Secours.

This story absolutely sickened me when I first heard about it.

I have heard on the news that this unmarked grave happened to be an septic tank. A septic tank (unused or not)!!!
If that is true, this is evil of the very highest level.....I did know that such unfortunate children were never given christian burials at that time, but had assumed they would still have been shown some dignity.

Those people responsible have to be the most vile & evil people imaginable.

I guess the reason there hasn't been a major public uproar is because at this stage, these type of stories no longer surprise the Irish public with regards to the Sisters of the Bon Secours.

“The death certificates suggested malnutrition was a major cause of the deaths”.

    Malnutrition = starvation.

Septic tanks are supposed to digest waste. You could almost believe that some people were trying to get rid of the evidence.

Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to these people, pure evil, I know religion should not be judged by who run it but bloody hell to jump on the moral high horse after the atrocities they practiced is mind boggling.

The sad thing is the church still has a grip on primary education. For example you pay your dues at mass on Sunday in small rural town land areas and a percentage goes toward the upkeep of the school therefore giving the parish priest a say in the Management of the school. This really should be done away with, I cringe at the taught of it.

Also ireland is much more diverse and we have kids from Different nationalities and religions who are we to impose the beliefs of Catholicism unto them.

Trying not to go off topic here but around where I live the Catholic Church has nothing to do with the Catholic Primary school funding. I believe the Church of Ireland does support Protestant Primary school. As for other religious denominations, there is always the Multi Denomination Primary School if they don't want to attend the others.

It is about time that religion had no controlling input into education!

Not all but some community's yes it still happens. Back on topic it's quite incredible how a society let this happen to young girls I believe that a society should protect vulnerable people, we as a nation let it happen the parents, grandparents all experienced the firm hand of the church and still let it happen to they're own children just to conform with society. Thankfully we have moved on but still the grass roots of this organisation try to hinder the escort community from safety, all for the sake of money and power.

You should hear the way they talk its black and white 80% trafficked or forced into the industry the ladies that choose the lifestyle are treated with contempt and don't seem to matter. The fundamentally being its immoral how wrong they are, now everyone is entitled to an opinion but to brush the facts under the the table for they're own agenda and money is the ethos.

I've heard people compare what happened in these institutions to the concentration camps in Natzi Germany. The punishment for anyone involved in that case should be similar. How many elderly EVIL people in this country are relaxing in state of the art retirment homes. They should be languishing in the Joy.

Story -- Mass grave of hundreds of children in septic tank etc. : leading international news on BBC , CNN .

Will there be a meaningful reckoning now ?

Will international scrutiny finally force a meaningful investigation and in due time , punishment ?

Has the story make it to front page of Irish papers yet ? (I'm overseas xx)
