An excellent article. Fair play to Fionola Meredith. The commitee are determined to ignore the fact that many sex workers actively choose to provide this service and often bring genuine happiness into the lives of the disabled and terminally ill.

Paul Givan's weasel words, particularly concerning Laura Lee's disabled clients were beyond contempt. And since Mr Givan is happy to reveal Laura Lee's hourly and discounted rates, it's only fair to reveal that his own total expenditure and allowances for the year April 2012/March 2013 were £91,146.09 (Source NI Assembly Members Expenses).

You might like to read that figure twice, just to let it sink in. Narrow minded MLA's don't come cheap folks. And it's probably fair to say that whatever service he provides, it isn't free or even discounted...

For the record, Laura Lee was at the hearing to put the case for sex workers. She was not on trial. She answered often extremely provocative questioning in a brave, calm and honest manner, even revealing her real name and confirming the aforementioned discounts for the disabled, neither of which she was under any obligation to do.

Givan meanwhile exuded the air of smug righteousness typical of his party and it's hypocritical religious undercurrent. They won't budge an inch on their principles (unless of course it's politically expedient to do so). Their stance on the gay community and abortion is widely documented, as is their opposition to alcohol, the Irish language and plays/films insulting their narrow religious world-view. Several of their members treated the Woman's Coalition with contempt in Stormont. All in all you can't expect any better from them, but they DO expect the electorate to vote for them. That choice at least is ours.

It really doesn't show TORL in a good light when they are willing to get into bed with that lot.

Thank you very much for your kind comments and I can assure you, that particular battle may be over but the war is ongoing. I think it's important that the general public see exactly how bigoted and hateful these guys are, it's breath taking.

I have lodged a formal complaint and will continue to speak to the press too, that kind of behaviour is not permissible, ever.

All along they've told us that the people selling sex are the victims, but now when it suits them they say that the disabled clients are.

Fair play to you Laura. I hope you continue to shame this excuse for a political party as much as possible.

Sadly you're not alone. The DUP have a long track record of verbally abusing others. Particularly worth noting, given their supposed concern for women in this bill, is their treatment of the Women's Coalition, a small political party who had several members elected to the NI assembly about 10 years ago. The DUP's reaction when the Women's Coalition spoke in chamber including making mooing noises and shouting ''get back in the kitchen'' and ''silly women'' -- behaviour that would have disgraced a nursery school class. Ruhama and the ladies wanting to 'turn off the red light' really should have a look at who they're in bed with.

See also DUP contempt and indeed hatred for the gay community, pro-choice campaigners, Irish speakers, Irish culture and even other Unionist parties. Their finance minister was photographed frolicking naked on a beach with a young lady (fine moral standards I'm sure) yet still felt able to refer to Irish as a 'leprachaun language.' And let's not forget the childish antics of their former leader who heckled the pope, threw snowballs (I kid you not) at an Irish premier and attempted to 'save Ulster from sodomy' in the 1980s.

The DUP feel themselves superior to everyone else, in politics, religion, nationality and gender. This despite the fact that they are politically a shrinking fish in a very small pond. They may soon not even be the largest party in Northern Ireland and their uncanny knack of pissing just about everyone off in one way or another is hastening their downfall.

Laura is just one more victim of these political toddlers who have contributed nothing to their country but taken plenty out in expenses claims.

Exactly, it's usually a case of all 'prostitutes' are exploited by men (for 'men' read rapists) but when a disabled person goes to see an escort it's the escort who's exploiting him

The treatment of Laura Lee at the hearing was disgusting. Givan and Wells are certainly going the right way about creating an island dominated by John Charles McQuaid types that dismiss anybody who doesn't agree with them on issues that should be about personal freedom.

The way I see it is this.

I could have started shouting, I could have back answered them. I chose to keep the head and let them dig themselves into an even deeper hole than they're already in. What that has resulted in is - Wells has a formal complaint put in against him, as does Givan. The media have (in part) turned on them, from a humanitarian point of view, so in summary, they look like the vicious bigoted thugs they are, Givan in particular.

To give him his due, Wells has at least tried to defend the indefensible in the press, Givan has said nothing, which to me says it all. He really does believe he is above having to answer to anyone. We'll soon see about that.

In the meantime, I have been asked to speak at the Belfast Labour Party Women's conference and the BBC are looking for me too, plus I am pro-actively going after media opps, so by the time I'm finished ...
