    Default App Recommendation Thread

I thought that this thread might be handy because many of us now have smart phones and android phones, and there are thousands and thousands of useful (and fun!) apps we can use.

Recently I bought myself a Windows Smartphone (Nokia Lumia 520) and I have to say, it is brilliant! It was only cheap but a lot of fun to use and I can customise the phone. Useful apps I have downloaded for it include

    Apps for Windows Smartphone:

Xbox One Smart Glass: I can check my gamerscore, read reviews and use the 'Companion Mode' while playing some of my games to get more out of them. And it's free!

Rayman Jungle Run: This cost me 79p and it is a very simple yet beautifully presented game. You play as Rayman (surprisingly) and you have to tap the screen to jump and hold to glide in the air in order to collect Loomins and avoid hazards. Great fun to fill a few minutes or for boring journeys.

Phone Guitar App: If you play guitar and use tabs, then this is just the same as 'Ultimate Guitar Tabs', but completely free of charge.

What apps can you recommend, and don't forget to tell us what device they can be used on

I have these on my Android phone, but they may be available on Apple and Windows products.

If you haven't got it already, Google Drive is a good one to have. If you have documents that you want to look at at home, on your tablet, or on your mobile, you can store and write them on there. Any changes you make are then updated on all devices you have. Only issue is that it is entirely online - you can't even edit a document or start a new one to upload later if you aren't connected to the internet.

I also have the Emergency Information: ICE app on my phone. It is a little button that appears on your lock screen and gives emergency services details in case of an emergency (such as who to contact and any allergies you may have). I think it cost me £1.69 or something like that, but worth it in my opinion.

I was also about to recommend Spaceteam for Apple users, but it now finally on Android... I will download later and update.

Here are a few apps that I have downloaded on the Kindle Fire:

Netflix: Free app but it there is a £5.99 (UK) monthly subscription charges, but if you are a fan of movies and TV series and don't mind waiting for things to come out, this is a great app to have. You do need a WiFi connection to watch your favourite movies and series, but I watched the whole series of Lost last year in the comfort of my bed

Babbel: Free to download and use language apps. Very basic but it helps with pronunciation and spelling of words and phrases that you will find very useful when abroad. I have the French and Polish versions installed.

Skype: Very easy to use and works well with the Kindle Fire camera. Excellent camera and sound quality.

Stellarium Mobile: After seeing the thread on this site about planets, I downloaded this app to see what our solar system looks like, and how the planets look comparatively to Earth. I have to say, I have been memorised by it! It even shows the constellations of the star signs we use:

Also on Kindle Fire, if you visit the app store regularly, each day they feature the free app of the day. Sometimes there are great things, other times not so great, but worth the money

Everyone should get Spaceteam. Tons of fun (and frustration) for everyone It can be done by bluetooth or wifi, depending on the phones you have. Basically, you all have a control panel for a space ship (different ones) and you have to complete the instructions, but the instructions won't always be for your panel so you have to talk through it and communicate.

I tried it this weekend and failed miserably

Do not, I repeat do not get Flappy Bird if you can avoid it. It is, quite possibly, one of the most irritating games of all time. It was on my phone for all of a minute or so before it was deleted

I have no patience, and it is one of those really irritating games that seems nearly impossibly and makes you throw your phone/tablet/whatever you are playing on across the room. Hard.

Got a few friends with broken phones now

Anyone else experienced the hell that is Flappy Bird?
