You would be surprised at how often it works, usually if people always put there computers into sleep or hibernation mode instead of shutting down you can get updates that will disable devices until the new version is installed. I had an update recently that disabled my gpu, after trying the usual fixes I tried to reinstall drivers but it couldnt find the gpu even in device manager, I though it was bricked but after a restart all was back to normal.
The beauty of the internet is that there is always a 'close' button.

So... there should be nothing wrong with your sound drivers if you're getting sound to headphones (and if all else fails you can pick up a small set of speakers pretty cheaply). There is a small possibility something has gone physically wrong with your speakers but I think its very unlikely. Probably the best option would be to check the hardware configuration of the speakers through control panel (haven't used windows in years so someone else will have to talk you through it )

If you haven't rebooted your laptop yet then absolutely this is something you should do, especially if its been on standby / hibernation for the last month. Computers are prone to being glitchy, its a relatively common occurrence for some software or hardware component to randomly stop working from time to time, and a reboot will normally sort you out.

And unless there's been a power surge (which would have fried your laptop and left it completely unusable) the only problem with leaving it plugged in is it'll shorten your battery life

Yeah, I'm sure it does work most of the time!

I had a girl friend a few years ago that almost NEVER completely shut down her computer, she always just let it go into sleep/hibernation. When she was at work, at night, even away on holiday, she always left it on. It must've been 'on' this way for MONTHS ON END! And of course, as you'd imagine and rightly expect, she started to complain that her computer was RUNNING SUPER SLOW.

When I went over to lend what assistance I could and asked all the basic questions, finding out that she NEVER shut down or did restarts (to let the computer simply 'reset' itself and allow all the updates to go through), I asked WHY she never shut it down completely or did a system restart, to which she replied: "It took FOREVER for it to get going again the last time that I did shut it down, so I leave it on all the time." My jaw hit the floor, as I knew immediately that that last time that she actually did shutdown or restart it, there must've been updates that went through, which we know will make the boot-up process THAT ONE TIME take longer as the updates go through. I explained this the best that I could, but I'm pretty sure she kept that computer ALWAYS on, even after that...

Anyway, hope Stephanie will get things all sorted on hr end!

It works sometimes Worth a shot, anyway

Turning it off and then on again, the modern day equivalent of "give it a kick"!

    - Did

    - No dial

    - All done , it said "failed to play test tone" ... x
