I think you were taught well and where the chocs are not necessary, it is a lovely gesture and most ladies would appreciate it openly.

I know plenty of people who give presents and tips to people like this at Christmas. The bin men get a tip, paper boy etc etc. If you appreciate a service then why not show it? I did have a client who gave the chocs after the service, if he was happy with it and that was in a way more special, because it meant he appreciated the service and it was a thank you. Giving it at the start, well he may want to take them back after lol.

There is no hard and fast rule with regards to bringing gifts so its really up to yourself ,most times on first visits its not something I do ,on revisits mostly I do ,then sometimes if a lady is on a tour then bringing along flowers is not much use if she has to leave the location within a day or so and how many boxes of chocolates can she eat ? but you have hit the nail on the head as it were , the best things you can bring to a meeting is to be polite and well mannered ( and goes without saying well washed lol )
