14 Councils now support campaign
TDs and Senators urged to act as political term commences
Statement by Immigrant Council of Ireland and Men’s Development Network
Kilkenny County Council has become the 14th local authority to support laws targeting the buyers of sex following the passing of a motion at a meeting this evening (16th Sept 2013).
Campaigners from the Immigrant Council of Ireland and the Men’s Development Network say the vote is an important reminder to TD’s and Senators as they return to Leinster House that the time for action against pimps, traffickers and organised crime has arrived.
In June cross-party and independent members of the Oireachtas Justice Committee unanimously recommended the introduction of laws targeting the buyers of sex in order to cut demand for prostitution.
Welcoming the Kilkenny decision, Denise Charlton, Chief Executive of the Immigrant Council of Ireland said:
“There is now clear political momentum for changing the law with Councils across Ireland deciding they want the organised crime which lies at the centre of prostitution removed from their local communities.
Our support is coming from those local authorities representing both urban and rural Ireland, showing how the pimps and traffickers have spread their criminality into every county.
It is time for our politicians returning to Leinster House to take note of the groundswell of support and act on the unanimous recommendations published by the Justice Committee in June.”
Alan O’Neill, Chief Executive of the Men’s Development Network added:
“We are delighted with this result, which again sends out the message that the South East of the country wants to Turn Off the Red Light. We want to thank all those Councillors who supported the motion and ensured that Kilkenny has joined with Waterford in demanding laws targeting demand.
As our TDs and Senators from the South East prepare to return to Leinster House we will be asking each of them to build on the political consensus achieved in the Justice Committee report and introduce laws to bring about real change and offer hope to women and girls trapped in a life of threats, abuse and violence.”
