    you talk about records drawings etc, which show mermaids to be half human half fish, well at least thats what i always thought a mermaid was

    No no, mermaids would be (keep having to remind myself I'm talking in a hypothetical sense here) an entirely new species that have adapted to aquatic life. Or the last common ancestor of humans and mermaids somehow moved to a water environment and adapted to it and evolve into mermaids. And of course that ancestor was a mammal, so mermaids would be mammals that adapted to an aquatic environment.

    ^^ Of course that is all assuming that mermaids would look like humans and look somewhat humanoid to suggest any recent ancestor at all.

    No, but you said mermaids would be half fish, I assume simply because they have a fish-like body. I then attributed that to dolphins since their body from an external perspective is like a fish.
