That's the great thing about Bruce Springsteen: he can recraft and reshape his songs to the point that two versions of the same song can evoke very different emotions.
Take Born In The USA, for instance. Below is the original demo version, which I much prefer to the more famous studio version. To me, the meaning of the lyrics are overwhelmed by the martial drums in the latter version. Indeed, many people - most famously, Ronald Reagan - thought the song was a celebration of US patriotism because they only really heard the chorus. When you listen to the pared-down, minimalist acoustics of the original, you get a much better feel for the bitter irony in the song's repeated one-line chorus.
