Thread: The Myth of the Happy Hooker: Irish Times

Default The Myth of the Happy Hooker: Irish Times

    http://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-s...1358702?page=1

An interview with former escort/prostitute/street worker Rachel Moran by Katie Holmquist. Rachel Moran has just published a book 'Paid for: My journey through prostitution'.
I have sympathy for Rachel Moran based on her account of her life. But her argument that all men who visit escorts have zero respect for women and are habitually prone to violence does not ring true.

There's an interesting discussion kicking off already in the comments section.

I doubt if she would make any of that up. But I think she was wrong in saying all escorting is the same as she didn't do the escorting we are all used to. That is escorts who work from their own or rented premises. She was a street worker and worked in brothels. Her experiences would be different to an escort who works in her own or rented apartment/hotel. Also this was between 1990 and 1998. Things might have been a lot different compared to now. Saying all escorting is like that is wrong. It;s like comparing night to day. Rugby League to Rugby Union. Premiership football to non league football. Two similar things but very different.

When Tubridy mentioned a former prostitute and the name Rachel I thought it was Rachel Divine that was going to be on

I can assure you there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that she made up the "Waterloo Road" section...it is absolutely impossible that she could have been there (I have checked with others). I am a bit creeped out that she would be so specific (in the book) about exactly where she was...it is almost as if she is trying to force me to directly collude with her lies. (NO WAY!)

As for the rest, all I can tell you is that I have read 3 different memoirs from the same time. All got a bit creative BUT I could recognise plenty of people and places I had known in all of them...

...I cannot recognise one single place or person she refers to in this...I have gone over and over it looking for something...but not one single thing rings any bells at all. Though I picked up loads of material discrepancies. It was a very small world.

I had assumed for months that she was probably a sex worker later, say from 1997 and just invented the early part so Ruhama would back her, but having read the book I now doubt even that much.

as I said in an earlier post, (maybe different thread) this sounds like a put up job to get publicity for the bill.
