Question Is Dublin the only European capital without a red-light district ?

150 years ago Dublin had the biggest red-light district in Europe, in the area called Monto (now Talbot Street).

There were over 1600 prostitutes (5 times more than now).

London has Soho, Paris has Pigalle, Amsterdam basically is a giant red-light district. Even in Rome you can still see ladies of the night plying their trade on the streets.

What's wrong with a red light district?

Why is it IFSC considered a red light district? Do we go in knickers on the street in front of the Bank of Ireland?

I think if prostitution would be legal everywhere in the world, there would be no more trafficking, no more PIMPs and no more Swedish Laws.

I'm upset.... SEX workers will never disappear as long as sex is the most important activity in everyone's life.

They just make it worst by trying to stop it.

I know i usually don't open this kind of topics, but today i just imagined Dublin with a red light district just like Amsterdam. And i think that would bring a lot of income to the capital of Ireland.

There would be a sex tourism, who has been to Amsterdam and never thought of visiting the red light district??? No one !!!

Me actually, i was too busy brushing off the hippies offering me hash !
Its a very good question, not many cities dont have some sort of red light district (I'll pass on the Pigalle...thnx)
Peter Stringfellow couldnt even get a lap dancing club open in Dublin, so the chances are slim.
I think the IFSC just has that reputation because of the gutter press, the lazy Dublin journalist who write lazy journalism cant be bothered to look any further

Sadly the decision makers in this country fail to see that the benefits of legalized prostitution are far greater than the increased criminalization of it.

They fail to see that bringing in laws that not only protect the ladies and gentlemen "selling their wares" (so to speak) but regulate the "industry" they also protect those who avail of the services of escorts.

Bring in a healthcare system for escorts and ensure they are tested regularly and that the escorts must prove that they do not have any STD's etc but also and lets be fair here more importantly provide a system of security where the girls are projected from low lifes.

Anyway I've rambled on way too long. I'll shut up now.

My only problem with red light districts, is that they can be really seedy. Somewhere like Pigalle in Paris, you get 'girls' standing at the door (some of whom are an insult to the term mature escort!) girls hanging out the windows all haranging you as you walk down the street (well walking up and down several times actually).
Makes you wonder why the authorities here complain, at least its (mostly) done discreetly and isnt in yer face (pun intended)

I think that Amsterdam has given the sex industry a bad name in terms of how outsiders view it and I wouldn't really want something like that in Dublin or any other part of Ireland. I've had several opportunities to visit the place with my friends over the years and I never went along.
