The Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality will meet on Wednesday 23 January 2013 at 2 p.m. in CR2 LH2000 to resume hearings on submissions received in relation to the review of legislation on prostitution in Ireland

Quite frankly I think this whole process is deeply flawed. Too many of the deputies and senators have closed minds and have already decided that they wish to introduce the Swedish model come hell or high water.
How Senator Bacik can have the audacity to sit there and disagree with Dr. Whitaker just shows her true colours. I've still only got as far as 1h 20m and maybe she redeems herself but I doubt it. I will also be interested to see if she bothers to attend this meeting as I note she didn't attend the first. Was she only present on the 16th to discredit S.W.A.I.

A direct quote from the chairman's website states

The criminalisation of the purchase of sexual services rather than the sale of sexual services was regarded as unique when the Swedish legislation was first passed. As legislators and members of the committee responsible for reviewing Ireland’s prostitution legislation, it is important to meet with fellow parliamentarians in another jurisdiction to discuss their experiences of the drafting and implementing of this ground-breaking legislation, while it is also important to meet with those responsible for policing the legislation to discuss how it works in reality.”

How can this be a fair and just process I would really like to know. What's the point if making a submission to people like this. The committee should be neutral and make up their minds after hearing the evidence not prior. As I said a deeply flawed process.

The escorts of EI should put together a spreadsheet/petition with following information and send it to the committee and give it to Rachel to forward to the media. If a couple of hundred escorts put their name to something like this it would send a powerful message.

Totally agree - this battle will ultimately be won/lost by the Escorts - however,i think what is most important however is to use friendly faces in the media (like Jim Cusack) to provide articles for the escorts to nail the commitee as well as express their views on why prostitution works for them . Ideally, I'd really like LBT to stay closely involved to the issue as you really are exrtremely eloquent and reassuring in interview . Whilst Rachel deserves huge huge huge credit for her efforts, English is not her first language and so can be isolated as merely one voice. The commitee (with odd exception) have made their minds up already - all that can be done is to discredit the biased committee via Sindo article by the escorts on the grounds of biased predetermined opinions, political populism , refusal to engage with sex workers , refusal to investigate other models ,refusal to challenge specific elements of the Swedish Model which deliberately seek to harm escorts(landlord criminalisation) etc. I think public minds would be a little more opened if they are aware of the deliberate railroading by parties gfor mutual benefits.At the very least some of the Commitee members should be 'outed' for their deliberate collusions in the deceptions
Either way , the escorts are going to have to start assimilating together or the Model is inevitable.
If as satisfaction says , the escorts can form a lobby group in the next few weeks to formulate a letter to the Minister , listing matter-of-factly , the deliberate collusion by most members of the committee with the various idealogies ,thereby showing an unacceptable disregard for escorts safety,in relegation to subjective moral views ,topresent and actually discuss with the Minister teir feelings ,then better again.
Ultimately , all the escorts want is an unbiased , fully-informed recommendation after examining all social models made by an agenda-free deleagtion so as to optimise their safety.

I'll send a few pm's today to a few of the girls who have expressed opinions to see if something can be started to get things going. I'd really like if LBT stays involved - in fact ,i think its crucial esp since you made the big step already with the brave public protest with Rachel.

This line-up (coupled with the blatant omission of Independent Sex Workers [and a possible Client Representative]) yet again demonstrates how biased and prejudiced the Consultation is being conducted.

An excellent idea satisfaction. However, I do believe that if the (current) members of the Joint Oireachtas Committee received such a submission, it would be the proverbial "dirt swept under the carpet (before anyone sees it)", on the part of the JOC.
Though an excellent suggestion, the one thing that would add weight to the credibility of this petition would be public acknowledgement (by an appropriate Independent Sex Worker Representative) of the compilation of said petition immediately before the submission of said petition so that the petition can't become the proverbial "dirt swept under the carpet (before anyone sees it)" by the JOC.
