I'm reading and enjoying Citadel - Kate Mosse

It's about womens' roles in the Caracassonne resistance network under German occupation.
    War, passion and courage!

Pandora's World and Judas Unchained by Peter Hamilton. One novel in two volumes of one thousand pages each.

Hard SF with a lot of laughs, adventure, sex and violence. Fantastic characters, genuinely alien aliens and some really scary humans too. It is not an easy read but it is well worth the effort. If it is ever made into a movie, it will make Avatar and all the Tolkein stuff look limp.

If that is too much, try Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. A more conventional length for a novel but just as much of the hard SF, sex and action as the Hamilton books.

The Report of the Leveson Inquiry: Culture, Practice and Ethics of the Press.

    http://www.official-documents.gov.uk.../0780/0780.asp

Big selling point is that it's free, and in fairness it could arguably reach the fiction market.

    I would suggest some 'X-Men' for 'X-Mas'!

The entire entire 'Messiah War' storyline between the X-Men and Cable is really fantastic. You can start with right at the beginning with X-Men: Messiah Complex, and then follow the story in Cable: Messiah War and Cable: Waiting For The End of The World, and then of course into the Cable/X-Force Messiah War crossover! That'll get ya through the holidays for sure!
