There are several ways of explaining this term so I'll list a few:

It usually means that you are just doing something without much thought or feeling.
or
Another saying but means the same: Your body is present, but your brain is somewhere else
or
When somebody has got bored of doing something, that they once enjoyed, but they have to keep doing it, they are said to be just 'going through the motions.'

Now please don't give out to me and yes I understand the situation you are in with your phone but i would not like you to be taking up my time or diverting my attention from the fantasy of visiting an escort by looking or texting on your phone.
Visiting an escort is not only about sex and physical things, for some (don't know how many) it is also about mental stimulation, emmersing yourself in a fantasy and making yourself believe this person (you) is here to fulfill my dreams, now how can I do that if you are texting the next client. I don't want to know about the next client or the last just the here and now.
Can I be bold and make a suggestion, could you not leave your phone in the toilet and make some excuse that you want to freshen up in between rounds and go to the toilet to check your phone??
