Thread: What is a racist?

  1. Default

Kate, from reading your many post's i know you are not a racist, you have opinion's and you are not afraid to voice your opinion's,
i admire you for that, but please don't let this weigh on your mind so much, it is just not good for you.
If you feel it in your heart , you know it's true.

I know I'm not a racist, but I wondered if this is one of those topics that is ambiguous or is it pretty cutndried?

    What makes someone a racist?

Oh by the way I have never said no to any potential client based on their origin, but I have said no to men I could not understand over the phone.

I have dated men from all over the world and I do not see colour, but I see the person.

I know it has nothing to do with me, but I feel an inward guilt for the wrong that has been done historically with regards to slavery. As a child I cried buckets when watching the film roots and made an inward decision never to judge someone by their colour.

I am sickened by racists and have actually stopped dating someone, because of his attitude towards black people.

I have many friends of all different nationalities. Where they or their parents were born has no bearing on our friendship.

To me someone who is racist is someone who singles someone out for being racially different and hates them for no other apparent reason. They may be verbally, physically or mentally abusive towards them and treat them with contempt.

    So... what are your thoughts?
I have to say Kate I am dumbfounded that anyone would accuse you of being a racist, you have always come across as someone that sees everyone as equal, whats next ?,someone being accused of being a member of the klu klux clan ?,and before anyone asks they refused me membership,as I would have lowered the tone of the group, seriously though,we are all the same, all equal,or more importantly, should be.

Kate, sorry did not read this whole thread but still wanted to reply to the topic. Ones saw a movie, after a book from John Grisham. A father, coloured, was charged for murther on the rapist of his daughter. The reason was because this guy got away with it. During the trail everyone was allowed to say his word, it looked like he would be conficted for murder because of his colour. Then the defence lawyer had the last word and asked the jury to close there eyes and started telling what happened not looking at color or skin. You would judge so much different. I know this was a typical Amarican movie but still.

I'm only just back yesterday after a week out of the country, so just hearing about this situation. Sorry to hear about the trouble Kate, I've never read anything you've posted that I would even vaguely characterise as in any way racist, and I have yet to look at the original thread where the alleged racist comment(s) were made, as it's the length of a Harry Potter book at this stage.

I'm not in the frame of mind to throw in my 2 cents as to what my own understanding of racism is, as my MA in Cultural Anthropology won't allow me to put in a mere 2 cents worth on the topic. But I can say that, based on what's been said here, that perhaps-- just perhaps-- there's a few who may have been a bit over-sensitive(?) about what you allegedly said, and they took it in a way that you didn't mean it to be taken? I don't know. I just hope that the issue will be resolved with no hard feelings between anyone in the end.

Thank you for all the replies and support. I think at the time I was mortified that anyone reading the thread might actually agree with her statement.

My son when he was at primary school was once asked by his teacher (who was quite frankly losing a grip on controlling the class) what it was that he didn't like about her. She had the whole class in a circle in the playground and asked them all one by one, as it had become complete chaos. He replied that he didn't like the way she bribed them with sweets. Of course she said that was easily rectified and stopped giving the children sweets immediately. The rest of the class were a bit miffed with him, as that was about the only thing they did like about her, but the point is he knew she was bribing them and it was wrong. He has always had a strong sense of justice and will question any injustice. I used to wonder where he got it from. I think I know now

Kate, I could sense how upset you got at the accusations, racisim is a dreadful thing, and unfortunately creeping more and more into society. we all have a responsibilty to stamp it out, and for that thread to degenerate into the cat fight it turned out was most disappointing from what started as very interesting topic. I stated i was disappointed with the moderators for letting it continue in the manner that it did. They should not allow anyone to shoot from the hip in the way that they did, nor allow such deflamitory remarks be posted publicly. You could see it unfold as more and more joined the debacle, and even at times use it as an excuse to massage their own egos by arguing for the sake of arguing. Kate, The whole thing was bordering on cyber bullying and unfortunately you were one of many victims of that. Thankfully one of the more clued on moderators has finally stepped in and drawn a line under this nonsense(well done benin),I hope that's the end of it, and try like many other participants not to be upset and move on.

The closing argument made no sense. There is no 'the murdered guys were assholes' defence in any law in the known world. Carl Lee Hailey, despite any sympathy, was guilty as sin by any legal standpoint
