I was quite good at this when at school. One of only 2 people in the school who had mastered this technique.

    Was it the Fosbury Flop

The Fosbury Flop is a style used in the athletics event of high jump. It was popularized and perfected by American athlete Dick Fosbury, whose gold medal in the 1968 Summer Olympics brought it to the world's attention.

Well if there are other trees around it make things a little more difficult.
My first suggestion was to measure the length of the trees shadow (as the sun
shines in Australia) then use a ruler place vertical (known height) and measure the length of shadow cast and do the ratio calculations.

Hunch that's not the answer for this question

Measure the tree using the pencil method
    Pencil Method

There is also another technique known as the “pencil” method.* For this you can use your pen or pencil, or anything of similar shape and size.*In this method it is not important that the length of the stick above your hand on your outstretched arm is equal to the distance from your eye to that same point of the pencil where it is held in your hand.*Simply hold out the pencil and move toward or away from the tree until the top of the pencil is lined up with the tree’s highest point and the bottom of the pencil lines up with the spot directly below that highest point.*Then turn your hand so that the pencil is “laid down” on the ground, keeping the bottom at the same point.*Visually mark the location where the top of the pencil now is found on the ground out away from the tree (It helps to have a second person for this purpose).*Tree height should be equivalent to the distance from the pencil bottom spot to the new pencil top spot >as long as that point is at a right angle to you!

The neighbour is human yes Legs.

Another clue. The neighbour likes the dog and the dog did not annoy the neighbour.

And another. The couple gave the neighbour a fine meal. :)

Great method Legs but not the answer I have.

    Couple of clues:

The men did not use angles or shadows.

They did not climb the tree.

Correct Bumble and well done. The men chopped down the tree and then measured it on the ground. :)
