I think you are write, Alexa. However, I've met a guy who was a total idiot and he treated her mom very well, while at the same time mistreating his wife badly. Maybe he shouldn't be taken into account because he wasn't exactly normal (I mean, he was really mean).
I was raised to respect everyone, but respect is a two way street. I will always give respect, but if it is not returned then I just avoid the person who can not or will not return what is a basic courtesy. As to your point of respecting our mothers is it not they who have instilled values in us as they raised us. The time and effort our mothers invested in us last a lifetime and although mine is no longer in the land of the living I think of her daily and quietly thank her for setting me on a good road in life.
