Couple of clues: The men did not use angles or shadows. They did not climb the tree.

My first suggestion was to measure the length of the trees shadow (as the sun shines in Australia) then use a ruler place vertical (known height) and measure the length of shadow cast and do the ratio calculations. Hunch that's not the answer for this question
