I am a non smoker, and I have a kid, however I too agree it is a step too far. Not only that but does no one see the irony in banning smoking in a vehlicle that emits more harmful toxins than any cigarette every will!!!!!

Sad statistic, one in three of us will get cancer, and one in four will die of it, regardless of smoking or any other factors.!!!!

As I said why not ban them altogether
Seeing as the government seen to worry about our health , but then they would loose millions in taxes
theres big money in smuggled tobacco as it is and
i'm sure a monopoly would be more desirable to those in the trade.

Yep, it's ironic. But, anything which reduces dangers has to be seen as a positive step.
I was chatting with a vietnamese fiend one time who believes that food additives and pesticides contribute to high cancer rates. She told me that cancer is virtually unheard of in her country where the people eat fresh, mainly organic food.

I'm not a smoker, but I do think it's a step too far. I do agree that passive smoking is bad for everyone especially children, however is it not a parents responsability not to smoke around their children? It's their conscious they have to live with, they should make their children's well being their priority. I would be very interested in how the government plan to police this policy? Surely it would be more beneficial to use the money ear marked for this campaign into educating the younger generation about the dangers of smoking. The government will not ban smoking out right, tobacco is a money spinner, the government relies on this revenue.

There is no way a child should have to inhale second hand smoke .So if they ban in cars and such is it hard to imagine that homes are next ???.: doc

As a non smoker who doesnt allow anyone to smoke in my car I personally would be in favour of a ban but I can see how other people would have a problem with it.Apart from anything else with falling Garda numbers I wonder how thoroughly it would be enforced.
    The Truth is out there.

I agree it's the parent's responsibility Sandy. However there are a lot of irresponsible parents...and not just parents.
Also, 10 years ago I was horrified, after employing a local authority childminder to look after my small child, to find that she and her family were smoking whilst the children were in the house. The council told me there were no rules in place to stop that.
Small changes have to be made to cover the loopholes.
Would that be allowed in a nursery?

some parents I know are fucking morons and they wouldn't think twice about smoking around their children, so unfortunately a situation where a law is passed stopping people from smoking in the presence of children might be a lot better than educating kids on the dangers of smoking
