I definitely prefer reading the original book the film is based on. There were a few of Tom Clancy's books adapted for cinema and
weren't that great as films, the main culprits being Patriot Games & The Sum of All Fears. Both films took the basic story line and changed it way too much. Clancy even remarked about Patriot Games that it used his characters but wasn't even his story.
Another 2 rubbish films were Raise the Titanic & Sahara, both based on Clive Cussler books.
If books are adapted right, they can make good films.

grrrrrrrrrrrrr Clive Cussler, always showing up in his own books to help out Dirk Pitt, FFS Pitt would be dead many times over if Cussler didn't just to be passing by a piece of driftwood in the middle of the Pacific.

As for books or films, books win hands down every time

If your into sci/fi there are a load of movies based on Philip K.Dicks books....Total Recall(We can remember it for you wholesale)I think they are remaking Total Recall with colin farrell..so not too sure how that would work out,Minority Report,Blade Runner(Do Androids dream of Electric sheep),A Scanner Darkly,The Adjustment Bureau(The Adjustment team),Screamers(Second Variety)...or another movie Starship Troopers (story totally different to the book)was based on a book of the same name by Robert A Heinlein or I am Legend based on the book by Richard Matheson.....
