    Default Gender Quotas...

for political parties. I can see both sides of it. It's a way of kick-starting reform and bypassing the backward gombeens who run political parties on a local level. However, basing running for election on the criterion of gender rather than merit is a retrograde step.

Women have a lot to answer for IMO. About 50% of the population, 100 years of being able to vote, yet still under represented in politics. We must draw from this that women voters do not vote for women candidates.

Will this new requirement improve the calibre of politician? If it results in more Beverly Cooper Flynns and Mary Harneys then No Thanks.

On the upside, the main parties will be crying out for women candidates. Any escort who wishes to run under the TOBL banner will find FF, FG etc more receptive to putting them on the ticket.

    What do you think?

Perhaps we would be better served by getting rid of all our current politicians and replacing them with qualified people who know what they are doing. I a woman happens to be better qualified for a position, give it to her. And vice versa. Gender shouldn't come into it.
This kind of forced equality tends to do more harm than good.

It's a nonsense to stipulate such a thing. I think what'd happen is there will just be more candidates put forward .... the "real" ones and then some random no hope women pushed forward as well just to make up the numbers if required.

Actually come to think of it, I think it's an insult to women because you're saying to them that we're going to help you out because you can't seem to help yourselves.

And what about quotas for gay, black, disabled, and punter segments of society? All under represented at present.

The gravy train is going to have to get more carriages!!

Get the best people for the job. Not because of their skin colour, gender, height, weight, sexual orientation or some other reason. Always get the best people for the job. Should apply to everything in life.
