Santa Anyone know about unlocking phones?

Okay so up until recently I had my usual phone and a punting phone which are on different networks. One phone met its untimely end after colliding with a wall a few days ago.

Soooo as to save myself buying a new phone I went to a vodafone shop and asked about unlocking so i could use both my sims in it. The 3 numpties working there were clearly irritated I'd interrupted their conversation, one blurted out to "check the website, that'll show you how". I asked if they'd just tell me... Nope, apparently that's beyond their job description. Employee of the month right there.
Anyway, I checked the website and i'm still just as clueless.

So does anyone here know to unlock phones?
I'm not even sure that it matters now since I think i'll ditch vodafone altogether after getting a taste for their customer service but it'd be handy to know for future reference.

As far as I know, the phone companies are legally obliged to give you the unlock codes. I had a similar experience and was told by someone in the trade that they have to give you the unlock code. I forwarded the phone company I had a problem with and it was done before you could bat an eye lid
