Default Garda plans to introduce web blocking in Ireland

    Have a read of THIS

Granted, when you read this what the Gardaí are proposing is right and correct, as anybody that tries to harm minors in any way deserves to be put in general prison population with a big sticker saying what they did.

On the other hand, where does it stop? Will it mean sites like E-I will one day get blocked as a way to stamp out prostitution in Ireland if TORL get their way? As hardcore porn is illegal (as far as I know) will YouPorn etc. get blocked too?

It certainly looks to be an idea based on good intentions but as the article states that once in force there will be nothing to stop them blocking anything they feel like. The thin end if the wedge I think.
They are trying to implement this in a typically Irish way, slip it in under the guise of a good idea to get people used to the idea. And then in moderated do what they want.

Just a thought... would they only be filtering irish web sites? Surely they couldn't filter .com addresses on such a scale?

from what I've taken from the article I think they can filter what the hell they want, just like the great firewall in china. Basically if the Guards/Government think something shouldn't be seen by the Irish people they just tell the ISP's to block example.com. Same as putting a rule on your home/neighbours router that will block all traffic from that site.

EDIT: Forgot to mention there are ways around this, you could always use a proxy from another country (for a fee) or even something simple like hidemyass.com can be used to browse what you want. But if the cops are any way competent then they will block these as well

i can understand the method in the madness if they block porn sites then there will be a lower amount of child porn going around but its not going to stop it. child porn will always happen no matter how sick it is and honestly will it not be harder for the guard to find the sickos who do this.

on the other hand sites like this will be blocked so how do people get numbers for the ladies who advertise here, we can't advertise in newspapers here so not only will us girls be at a loss for what to do you the clients won't have a way to get numbers

however much you look at this the repercussions are going to go on and on with the proposed blocking of adult sites

an Irish judge had his house raided a few years ago,
approximately 4000 images of minors were found on the
    hard disk of a PC.

the matter was dropped because the warrant (issued by a colleague)
was found to be out of date on the day that the raid took place.
