When I heard that Mick Wallace TD was on I thought nice one but OMFG.

He comes across as a nice guy if a little thick.

I think the girls need to put their marching boots on and make THEIR voice heard.

I am absolutely disgusted at the comments referring to Mick Wallace as 'thick'.

Mick Wallace is an elected TD , is the first public representative to express any opinion opposing TORL's blinkered world view and has at the very least gotten Ruhama/TORL to accept that a debate is required.
In one 10 minute radio interview he has achieved more than the rest of us put together.

And he's a man of the people. He might not have had all the arguments to attack the Ruhama representatives statements of 'fact', but at least he had the balls to tell her that what she was saying is not universally accepted and open to debate at the very least. And to start trading opposing 'facts' back and forth across the table would never work in a 10 minute interview. Because you will just come across as an apologist for the entire sex industry.

So, I would like to thank the man for his bravery, for standing up for escort girls safety and personal freedom.

I'd be pretty sure he's reading these pages tonight and must be EXTREMELY discouraged by what he has read. My initial post reflected what I thought at the time which is that Ruhama came out better , which they did, but this represents serious progress and hope for our campaign here.

And I think it would be a good idea if a few more of you express your support for him taking a stand.

I agree with you Brock. I don't agree with everything Mick Wallace said either.
However lest there be confusion it became clear he was not advocating the Swedish model later in the interview.
Ultimately he requested a debate so we can create our own model. His primary concern was for girls safety. That is paramount to our argument here also as is personal freedom.
And I believe this industry needs cleaning up. I believe there is an element of trafficking and coercion still alive in Ireland.
Something does need to be done about that. The status quo is not working. That something may well be just to better enforce current legislation. I dont know.

I would like to see a lot more debate. And Mick Wallace is encouraging that and thats a start.

You're clutching at straws. If the Minister for Justice wants to prosecute people who use prostitutes, then that will happen. The only people who may advise against it are the police, only on the grounds of wasting their time and man hours prosecuting men who are not proper "criminals" at all. Ruhama make the plea that most escorts and prostitutes are in dangerous situations ( once peope hear "Brazilian , African etc " , they think trafficking, pimps, drugs, exploited women, and quite often this is true etc. And Mick is in no position to alter their opinion. This would have to come from the industry itself, which may not be possible due to its clandestine nature and association with organised crime. You'd better hope the Minsister has bigger fish to fry, or some sense prevails at the top of the Gardai re wasting resources.

Fair play to Mick Wallace as an elected public representative for putting his head above the parapit and suggesting that there are alternatives to criminalising clients, suggesting that prostitution should be fully legalised and calling for a multi sided public debate on the issue. However, I don't believe that Mick Wallace is the ideal person to have trying to counter balance the arguements of the TOTRL campaign. He was totally unprepaired for that interview, no facts or statistics......all he was able to put forward were his own personal opinions and the anecdotal evidence of his mates in Germany.....(the impression I got here, was of a couple of brickies who had lost their jobs in Ireland, are now working in Germany without female companionship and like to visit the ladies for a bit of R&R)....and his language certainly would'nt have impressed anybody, male or female, let alone sex workers.....his reference was constantly to "the girls". Did Mick never hear the words "women" or "sex workers", or is he unaware that men and trans-sexuals are also involved in sex work.

The only service that Mick Wallace did, was to get across that it is ok to debate this issue rationally and in a mature fashion from the different perspectives. I believed that an articultate mature escort who had done her research, been coached in being interviewed and who would have had a wealth of life and personal experiences at her disposal, would have been able to debate the issues far better. For example, when the spokesperson for Ruhama stated that most women were drawn into escorting for the financial rewards (obviously trafficked escorts were not the isue here) and/or a lack of alternatives, an escort would have been able to counter with: 1. What alternatives can you provide for somebody in my situation and with my qualifications or employment experience? 2. What jobs.....where are they? 3. This job feeds, clothes and educates my children and pays the bills........do you want to take my livelihood away from me and to put me on the dole queue and my children in poverty? 4. What right have you to decide what work another person can or can't freely decide to engage in?

The spokesperson for Ruhama swept the floor with Mick Wallace.......the whole tone of the discussion was as if a school teacher was talking down to a naive pupil.......you could hear the smile in her voice at times. This woman is a professional in her field and Wallace a former builder who has been a public representative for a wet day at most. If Mick Wallace is the best that those whose oppose the TOTRL campaign can offer in future, then save yourselves the time and energy and just accept the proposed new law as a fait accompli.

No man, whoever he is, or however good his intentions are, is a suitable person to argue against the proposed new law. It would be turned around and hard line feminists would have a field day. Only women can win this one........so without wishing to be too crude, on this issue, if you don't have a vagina which is open for business, then don't open your mouth either. By all means contribute with suggestions or advice if you have experience in the media, P.R., marketing, politics, campaigning, research work etc., but on this issue, I believe that most people including women, will only listen to what other women have to say.

OK when I said that Mick came across as thick what I really ment was that he didn't perform well, he didn't seem to have his facts together.

While listening to him I kept wondering how he managed to build such a bug business as he just didn't come across as convincing.

I agree with other posters that it was a brave thing that he did....I just think that he got chewed up and spat out!!

Fair play to Mick Wallace for at least going on air to discuss the issue. But he hadn't done his research, he didn't have the facts. He kept referring to his 2 friends in Germany and their experiences of what it is like there.

Perhaps he knows a lot more about this than he was letting on , but couldn't say any more for obvious reasons.

I mean how many here could go public to campaign against the TORL, talk about their real life experiences. It's not an option for 99% of us
