Lady email scam - iTV documentary

iTV (a local Thai TV station) aired a documentary about a Thai man who was scammed 200,000 baht by a Thai lady in another town via email, who sent him her photo and mobile number, spoke politely, offered a relationship and implicitly sex, and cried on the phone saying she needed hospital money or she would die of leukemia. The story had many of the typical steps of a scam relationship, targeting a gullible and generous man, and building up to large money requests.

However, after sending the money to her bank, he got suspicious. After all, he had never met this lady, only seen her photo by internet and spoke with her by phone. He was a lonely man in a distant part of Thailand.

A private investigator with an iTV crew tracked her down. She was a fat and ugly lady with a computer connected to the internet, photos of pretty ladies in her room (some whom she knew), and lots of money. Her only job was scamming men by internet dating via the web.

This is not uncommon, as well as similar scams using email, mobile phones, landline call centers and proxies to answer the phones. Expats overseas are more vulnerable, but the scammers sometimes do these kinds of things to Thai men as well.

Far away from africa and anyhow familiar ...

Excellent, we can plan a double wedding then and save a few quid.

Tisn't jumping to conclusions when i've gotten both physical and e-mail scam letters from a particular country there.
It's also pretty common unfortunately.

You are right on that , but " good '' things get copied quickly .
In Thailand they call it Honey trap .And in Russia Venusscam.

I still have to say that the nature of 419 is a different one to those above , its mostly targeted to greed and procedes faster in the enrollment .

Pretty much any country where the laws aren't really enforced, or aren't enforced fairly, can become a base for these people. Nigeria certainly fits that description, and I've had quite a few emails from there. But many from other places as well.

Well as you can see it looks like my bachelor days are over. Once I get that 300k from my long lost uncle in west africa I fully expect that Gift and I will buy a house and settle down.

Beacuse the next email informs you that you have won the nigerian lottery, or that you just need to deposit funds into an account in the Gambia, or that the sender is stuck in Zaire and if you can send funds to get them out it will enable them to share the windfall they have managed to escape with. Its a well known West African scam Laura, thats all. CH isn't xenophobic
