    Question double standards...

i was wathing TV3's midday programme today. they were discussing
a news item about a man who complained about his older female boss
patting his bottom. the female panel giggled and one, a barrister, exclaimed that
this was political correctness gone mad.

yesterday, the same barrister motioned that 'sex slavery' must be ended in Ireland
without delay (immigrant council's recent call). now these two issues
are separate, but back to the first. if it is wrong for me to pat a women's
bottom (could lose my job), i have to take issue with same if the shoe
    is on the other foot.

    Sure. I am here!

I completely agree with you, it is double standard.

If you take as an example a man that goes to a police station and report that he has been a victim of domestic violence/abuse, many times he wont be taken too seriously and he probably will hear some “funny comments” not only from women but from other men whereas if it was a woman, people would tend to believe her version much quicker.

Probably because women have been the “fragile sex” for such a long time, society doesn’t see men in such a position to be bullied (or taken advantage) by women yet, especially in more "macho" societies.

I am one of the first to defend women’s rights but in this case I completely understand your indignation (I am sorry if this word is too strong for how you feel )

For the record, I think patting someone’s bottom in a work place is completely unacceptable from both male or female (unless the parts involved are escorts and clients of course).

I am not convinced that the man has a genuine case against his female boss, and I am inclined to agree that this is yet another case of political correctness gone mad.

The difference lies in years of women being paid less for the same work, and for for limited opportunities for advancement. In this context, patting a female colleague's bottom can be misconstrued in a number of ways that are not true if the roles are reversed.

    Just my two cents worth

Sexual Harassment is about perception, an employee or employer should not act in such a fashion that those actions could be perceived as being harassment of any kind.If any person feels harassed, the damage has already been done and intention to harass is not relevant. The sex and gender of harassed or harasser is also irrelevant.

thanks for your learned reply, Jasmin. the annoyance i feel
was with the way the female panel dismissed it.

girls pat my bottom in crowded bars sometimes and sometimes
i see bottoms that i want to pat. it is the double standard that is the issue.
men and women are no longer equal before the law or society,
women have become more equal. whats good for the goose...x

Don't take this TV programs too seriously. There is a program on TV, which I can't remember the name right now, with a panel of women, that I just can't stand. Please shoot me if I have nothing better to do and have to watch it

About patting someone's botton in a bar . . . I don't do it and I don't accept it, someone doing so, can expect the same . . . on their face . . . but when that happened it was just a reflexive reaction, normally i am not into spanking

Too much emphasis on women's rights (and maybe even men's rights in this particular case)........whatever happened to good old fashioned human rights?
