Thread: New anti sex trade legislation

  1. Default New anti sex trade legislation

There is a heated discussion about it here

"New law could criminalise men for buying sex" (IT) - boards.ie

that no one from the industry itself has posted on so far, perhaps someone on here would like to contribute?

Interesting. Seems to go OT into some argument about all sexual relationships being based on money in one way or another. The poll shows most would vote against the law. What is the general profile of people posting there. Would they represent an average cross-section of society?

This link is pertinent, I think.

Inquiry fails to find single trafficker who forced anybody into prostitution | Law | The Guardian

and sums up the reality I think (and hope). I mean, how many escorts have you come across on this (E-I) site that you would categorise as trafficked/victims?

There is an argument for drafting legislation that would focus on street prostitution (where I assume there is a high level of drug dependency) and make it easier for that segment of the sex trade to be eliminated. Whether such a distinction could be achieved successfully in law is debatable. Maybe this law, if enacted, will only target that area in practice.

Also, in the main, why criminalise dually consensual behaviour? And why criminalise only one party if you consider the act to be criminal? The suppositions must be that the female is 1- not in a position to freely make decisions, and 2 - is being exploited. These, I would argue, are false 99.5% of the time (a feeling backed up by the Guardian article).

The real solution of course is legalisation and regulation industry-wide. It would be safer, healthier, and a tax generator to boot. But that will not happen soon.

Unfortunately I am not sure anyone is listening to us here, despite our obvious wisdom.
