We seem to have priced ourself out of the tourism market
Ireland is down a stagerring 1 millon visitors this year from last
even giving an average spend €500 per head that is an
astounding loss to the economy and in reality the average
spend probably much higher.
When are we going to get our act together

A million down on last year is about 20%, which is a lot! (about 0.5 billion minimum)
But, when you remember that Ireland has to borrow that each week to keep things
afloat-it does pale into insignificance. I don't think it is just prices, I think the
perception of Ireland as 'safe' has altered.

Honestly, people have not got the money any more anywhere. Lots of the hotels and everything touristy kept their prices up, whereas prices have dropped a lot of places elsewhere in Europe, so folks went holidaying other places.
Just a personal opinion
Micheal O Leary has been on about the airport tax for the last few years. He was probably right.
This is a little simplistic. Given the down turn in the world economy it was inevitable that tourism into Ireland would be down. Add to that the airport tax and the reduction in the number of ryan air tourists which was a huge driver of the tourism numbers.
Add into that the ash cloud and the bad weather at both ends of the year and it is a miracle that it was not down my more than a million.
There are also other problems. For one the strength of the Euro relative to the dollar and the pound was a huge negative incentive for US and UK tourists.
For the next year there will be an improvement in tourism numbers. The airport tax has been reduced. The euro is weakening and these two factors alone will help drive numbers up.
Add to that the increasingly competitive nature of the Irish economy as wages continue to head south and as prices in hotels and restraunts are also becoming more competitive.
All in all it is not all that bleak in my view.

I think Ireland is less Irish nowadays and thats what people came to see, Irish collens and all the diddle di i shite. We are far too cosmopolitan now for our own good. I was horrified when Bewleys re-opened in Grafton Street and my coffee was served to me by a Mexican!
They can all drop their prices or go to the wall.
