Gay footballers

Sepp Blatter has been condemed for comments he made regarding the attendance of gay fans
at the Qatar world cup. They may single out Blatter but he is only reenforcing the bigotory
that runs from top to bottom of professional football against gays. The only professional
footballer that ever came out officaly Justin Fashnau ended up committing suicide because of
the absolute vile hatred and homophobia he encountered
It just proves how much more progressive the GAA and rugby are regards this when Donal og
Cusack and Gareth Thomas came out officaly in their respective sports in the main the officals
team mates and fans were very supportive.
Imagine what a footballer that would come out would have to endure from the terraces, to
be honest i dont think he could play,so while they may condemn Blatter its from the
grassroots the change must come. It even shows how they disregard the issue to award
the World Cup to them in the first place. Before people put all the blame on the suits the
silence from within football on the issue has been deafening

I think that to effect change, leadership must be present, and pronouncements on this subject must come from the top. It may seem unfair to target Blatter, but it MUST start with him.

Think about how football has tackled racism. Ok, I know its not quite there yet, but just compare now with what it was like 20 or 30 years ago.

It seems football has a bit more to go to sort out this problem. As has been said, they have done a fairly good job at ridding football of racism, so hopefully all kinds of discrimination can be eliminated. I had no idea about that footballer who killed himself either. That is quite sad.

I agree with scotus, change must come from the very top and then we might see some kind of change of attitude with regards to gay footballers.

Graham Le Saux got a lot of abuse and wind ups from other players, most notably Robbie Fowler, and that was only a rumour that he was gay because he read The Times instead of The Sun.
John O'Shea also got a bit of abuse from fans suggesting he was gay a couple of years ago.
So it's not just Fifa that are homophobes
