The weird thing is this:

If the govt would say: "We believe that we are OK and do not need the help but, we accept the offer and will call on it if, and only if, we need it."

Then the commercial lenders would have a lot more faith in the republic and commercial funds would be available at sensible rates and there really would be no need to tap into the support. There would be no knock on effect on sovereignty.

Instead, the govt postures with pride, commercial lenders are getting wary and looking past Ireland at Portugal and other Eurozone nations and thus the republic loses friends and may end up really needing support in 2011.
