    Exclamation World Series WTF!

    BASEBALL WORLD SERIES

Just watching Sky News this morning and their report on the baseball "WORLD SERIES", so wondering how many countries play in it and while my coffee was cooling down I googled it.

The "Baseball World Series" contains ONE yes ONE country America!

The 2010 "Football World Cup" however started off with 250 countries competeing.

Are there any American posters on the board explain to a simple geordie lass why its called the "World Series" not the "American Series"?

    Love and Liks Tiff

How about following the lead of rugby, and having the Two Nations tournament? The other country is Canada, in case anyone was wondering.

“I wish you wouldn’t keep appearing and vanishing so suddenly; you make one quite giddy!”
“All right,” said the Cat; and this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin, which remained some time after the rest of it had gone.

It has been called the World Series since the start of the 20th century so it's a bit late to be questioning it now! ;-)

Yeah, there's no doubt but that they take a lot of stick for that.

How come we don't have a World Series Hurling Cup?

Actually, the truth is a little more prosaic ...

Seemingly it was originally sponsored by a newspaper, and yes, you are way ahead of me, the newspaper had the word "World" in the title.

So the World bit actually refers to the newspaper.

I think you have the answer - the yanks do think that they are the centre of the universe which is just as well as when college kids were asked to indicate on a blank outline of europe where the main capital cities were the majority failed. I asked an american about this once and he countered could I do the same for states in america - I shut up at that stage.

As Jack Charlton said when asked about hurling "I'm always suspicious of games where you're to only ones that play it"
