Default Do you think there's some psychology to chosen avatars?

    Hi all,

Just a thought really. There's quite a variety of avatars on here, and I was wondering if people think that there's some psychology behind it?

For example, we have our resident cats, Poggo and Anon who are experienced punters and these animals (to me) portray a sense of wild, free and powerful personalities. Westside mentioned Alec Horan changing his avatar all the time... perhaps this represents a sense of a free spirited person who is unsettled or perhaps doesn't know what he wants?

All this is of course hypothetical, and it could be because they just like the pictures, but a psychoanalytical (Freudian) approach to psychology would suggest a deeper meaning to this.

    What does everyone else think?

Funny you should ask that Sam, I was thinking the same thing yesterday.
I wouldnt bare to much attention to Freudian thoughts or approaches as he was quite the quack and his methods were more questionable than groundbreaking

I don't think so. I just use a picture of myself, same as you and doozer.

“I wish you wouldn’t keep appearing and vanishing so suddenly; you make one quite giddy!”
“All right,” said the Cat; and this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin, which remained some time after the rest of it had gone.

Well, many people may think so too, but there are some who consider these methods very useful. Putting Freud to one side, do you think that some avatars reflect a poster's personality?

In some sense I do. Maye not the pic itself but maybe what it represents. For example whether its a funny one a cute one and off the wall one or a sexual one (although Frued would say that all the avatars are your sexual repressed fantaises about your mother)

That you are a mature person and confident of your heterosexuality.

I agree (with the former part of your reply), but I think the whole oedipus complex is (to an extent) a bit of a misconception. Agreed, his methods always verged to the idea of sex and sexuality, and in certain crime scene investigations in America, there is a corrolation between a man's preference in women, stating that there are certain similarites between the said person and his mother (as an example).

I've been considering why I was drawn to frogs as a choice of an avatar. The only thing I can think of is that for me, frogs are a symbol of change (from tadpole to frog) and are subtle creatures. I'm not sure if 'subtle' sums me up, but I can't think of any other reason.

I just chose my Spock avatar as I am a lifelong Star Trek fan.
Whether or not there is a deeper meaning to that I dont know.
    The Truth is out there.
