Thousands of police officers were deployed to protect marchers at Belgrade’s (Serbia) Pride parade yesterday as participants clashed with anti-gay protesters.

Reports claim up to 90 police officers required medical attention and two had been seriously wounded in the violence, which spread to other parts of the Serbian capital. Police said at least one gay rights activist had been beaten unconscious and more than 100 people had been detained.

Serbia's government is currently seeking EU membership.

Should countries with such intolerance be allowed membership into the EU?

There are a lot of reasons Serbia shouldn't be allowed in. There has been almost no effort to find and punish those responsible for the inter-ethnic violence of the 90's. This isn't coincidence. It's the same groups who were responsible for the ethnic cleansing then and the anti-gay violent protests recently, and for football hooliganism stretching back decades.
