I log into EI very often but for very short periods of times.
It might look like I spend all my time here when I'm actually not, so being invisible suits me better.
Sometimes, I like the fact that nobody can see what I'm up to when checking the "online users" list.

I sometimes switch to being visible for short period of times if I'm expecting urgent PM replies.

The term "elite" is used sarcastically so much that by default it's sarcastic. For example "The liberal elite" isn't really calling those liberals elite. "elitist" is similarly a word that is used pejoratively even though it could be an unloaded word.
