    Default European food security

No pics please by request of OP
Please also keep this thread on topic

It looks like food security could become a real issue in Europe in years to come
The race to the bottom in terms of squeezing the primary producer seems to be
taking a toll. Cheap imports are being encouraged driving producers in Europe
under cost of production either reducing or ceasing production .
Whats the problem u say? Well here it is, what happens when the inward
flow stops? It can with a stroke of a pen.
Russia have banned all export of Grain till at least the years end.
It has already had a serious effect, driving price forward considerably
Wheat in particular. It is forecast that bread and grain based products
like cereals will probably increase in price by 10%. These are staples
of the diet and in every shopping basket.
If the world trade talks have their way they will sacrafice agriculture
even further to open up markets of these huge producers for stuff like
computers etc. More and more European farmers will go out of
buisness we will get more and more dependent on imports and less
    self sufficent.
I believe in the long term we will pay a very heavy price, something
like a conflict would let us seriously vulenerable, even politically
it would be very dangerous as these countries would see the
posotion of power they have gotten into and can lean on us
    accordingly.
What has happened in Russia should be seen as a shot across
the bows and taken seriously as what could happen in the future on
a much larger scale. Now is the time to act before its too late

Do people want cheap non traceable food often of questionable
    quality and unpredicitable supply
Or are they prepared to pay a fair price for quality traceable food
    with a guarnteed supply
    The Choice can be yours
    Blatant promotion should be outlawed
    but

agriculture in europe is encased in a protected bubble ie price supports because of this the product price will just cover cost of production with no profit and this is where grants and incentives kick in to keep producers in business. So the bottom line is european producers connot and probably never will b able to compete on the world market. out side europe there is a lower cost base . Now europes actions are now back firing as there farmers cannot survive in a world market because they lived in sheltered accomadation all their lives ie price supports. So who do we blame not the consumer they have no choice i say european power that be including our own ministers who will deal with the highest bider no matter what cost

    The Choice can be yours

The choice can be ours? Really Ber? Wow! More insightful stuff from your good self. This time showing your ability to master the intricate world of Macro Economics.
Ireland is a greenfield country. If we stopped giving grants to farmer to produce X and then waste it we might actually become self sufficient. Go to your local supermarket and see where the apples are grown......Israel! Fucking Israel!

Also I notice you didn't reference a single one of your points. Care to mention which cereal packet you were getting a mental work out with this morning?

Good morning, my sweet corconian- I trust you slept well? Would you like my thoughts on the price of food or should I keep quiet and blend into the background?

this country couldnt support it self at this time in food it would take years just to bring costs down for consumer and producer by that time alot of them would have fallen by the way side and when this country would b self sufficent it would probably go the same road as the beet industry where all our sugar is imported at a lesser cost . No matter how u look at is its cheaper to import . Its a legacy of the eu

I see your point, and well made it is too. However, we are currently running at a fraction of what we are capable of. Using the beet industry as an example isn't comparing like for like, however. My point, in it's most basic economic form is that we could produce enough basic food stuffs to survive into the future. You are talking about luxury goods.

It's the basic law of comparative advantage.
