I have to say that compared to the UK, there seems to
be a lack of formal tuition of driving skills. 20 lessons would be average over there
and they never had an amnesty of 'free' licences-only in Eire...

i passed my text first time although i did wear a low cut top and fluttered the eyelashes a bit so that might have had something to do with it! lol!

i actually did not get one mark on the whole sheet!!! the driving instrutor told me i should frame it coz it never happens but that might be verging on the ridiculous!! lol! i took two lessons prior to the test but i had been driving for a few years before i took it and luckily had no bad habits, practise makes perfect!! lol!!

The rule of thumb was a lesson for every year you had lived. I had 20 lessons while
living in London. The first few lessons were tense, the instructor brought me out in
rush hour traffic and gave me the sweats with pedestrians weaving through the queues.
I changed instuctor 3 times because I found two a bit too moody-it must be a hard job
    though.

Did you get the test first time? Second time for me. I really wanted to get my license
(they dont allow people to drive without another full license holder over there).
I was elated when told "you have passed the test" shaking the examiners hand for
longer than he cared. Use of indicators is stressed over there (phychic ability is limited
for some people). Although the examiner hands you a certificate of 'competence' to
drive, driving requires on going care and attention and watch out for another prick
who could ruin it all for you!
i was 27 when i started to drive i failed the test the first time and got straight back into it and passed the second time i use to give driving lessons to help people with there faults its amazing the bad habbits we all get into after we have been driving a few years i would bet not to many would pass it again in a hurry me included at this stage

Passed first time, but was on second provisional at the time after living in Germany for a year.

And I agree with Westside that the test here has the wrong focus - in Finland they teach you how to control a skid amongst other things. Literally tonight I saw a car skid out on the M50 and there was not a serious pile-up because the traffic was fairly light at the time. Drivers here believe they know how to drive at speed (and they do!!), but have no idea in real life...

Everyone can drive at speed. Its stopping and controlling at speed is the problem.

Very good point - which the idiots don't realise. Fast in a straight line? No problem, anyone can do that and you're not cool. Controlled speed around corners and other situations? Then you're an F1 driver...

Here in Ireland ppl have to pass on a test and thats all?

In my country we have to take a course for couple of weeks, contains first aid and basic traffic, signs...etc,pass the test than few hours routine, how to park basic stuff again and after passing the routine exam we can go into the real traffic.Everyone have to take at least 30hours driving with the instructor to go for the exam.Never mind if u can drive or not.

First time i failed cause we have to check the lighs,breaks....everything and somehow i forgot to check if the break..
    Good bye Ireland!
