And the punishment is what, not to turn off certain ports or something but to just turn off all of the internet. Typical reactionary, nannyish, corporal punishment policy taken by the Irish government. First they'll make three phone calls to the person warning them of their behaviour, a three strikes and your out policy.

I suppose if they promise to be good girls and boys in the future they'll give them another chance in the future and let them go on the internet again on a preliminary basis. This applies to porn, movies and all types of downloading.... all p2p or torrents.... they can't stop the http ones unless they snoop on every single site you look at or block sites. It's ridiculous.

Eircom won't stop anyone from downloading anything with this. Nothing will happen in this except they will lose hundreds of thousands of customers. People are just going to switch to another provider straightaway, no phone calls, no stupid bullshit.

Ireland is the only country in the world and eircom are the only ISP stupid enough to do this. Out of all the hundreds or thousands of countries in the world, many ridiculous ones, only in Ireland is this decision being made.

The system is needed, in the words of Mr. Justice Peter Charleton, because "the mischievous side of the human personality, containing a repulsive aspect as well as an attractive and humorous one, has also come to the fore over the Internet."

Justice Charlaton, what a fitting name he has, sitting there talking to us all about morality. Record executives who earn millions on the back of the artists forced to sign up for them are coming out with sob stories about the industry being destroyed... BOO HOO.

If people want to share media on the internet, they're not going to be able to stop them. It's only going to get easier and easier to pirate material anyway. Ireland are becoming the laughing stock of the world over actions like these.

If people aren't going to buy as much media content anymore then they're just going to have to find a different way to make money. Maybe a government-subsidided industry wouldn't be out of the question.

What if someone is stealing their wireless from outside the house? What if they were sharing legal torrents? (eircom claim to only be able to view your IP address and connections, not their content).

Have worked in Eircom before, not a chance of that been implamented, the staff couldnt give a toss about it and wont be doing anything about it. Plus Eircom is gonna be sold again soon so I doubt any of the newer policies will be top of the agenda when courting prospective buyers

Can't see UPC going down this road, seeing as they are more international then eircom. And their service is way better. Ive also noticed how eircom have banned access to the pirate bay. this is ridiculous as theres loads of other sites you can download through

In this day and age there is no need for anyone to be with eircom. They are overpriced. There are better alternatives out there now.

Maybe somebody else knows a more definetive answer but I was under the impression that because of our constitution it is easier for the big companies to sue the ISP's for allowing there property to be illegally downloaded over there networks rather than trying to sue the end user, and seeing as most ISP's are just re-selling what they are getting at wholesale from Eircom, it is the main one that needs to protect itself or at least seem to be...

Yea you are right,they will lose a lot of customers if this goes ahead.Surely if the were to monitor e.g child porn it would make far more sense than monitoring something that has being going on for years.Sure there is no harm in downloading music.Sure it cut's down an already overpriced medium.

Get a grip eircom, seriously the guys who are involved in the mass download/upload of pirated material are too clever to have static IP addresses (or whatever it is) to track, more often than not it is the illegal element of a situation that hold a greater knowledge over those trying to control the situation. So eircom are going to end up with a bunch of screaming parents because the broadband got disconnected because little johnny wanted the Rhianna CD or something and will inevitably back down as their customer base spirals.

It's not like the music industry is going to collapse altogether because of this I mean they survived when we were all creating mixed tapes by sitting beside the radio hitting pause+Record and then play and then having to rewind because the stupid DJ start taking over the end of the track

As mentioned would it not be more productive to try prevent child porn images or cyberbullying in minors.

There is no chance for upc broadband where i live...so have to use eircom...and pay 60 something eur for a month..which is ridiculous

what about imagine? i know they are just using the eircom network (unlike upc which has its own) but are theysubject to the same checks that eircom are threatening? anyone know?

Agreed however Eircom still are still the ones you have to turn to if there is a problem with your line.

I'm was with a different phone provider for a while but after a while started to have problems with the signal. They told me they couldn't help as it must be my line. Nice convenient way out for them.

I don't find Eircom too bad these days and if you have a fault they go the extra mile to help you out.

Any company will be your fair weather friend, it's when things go down you find out who's really on your side.
