Ruhama backs Judge Neilan's calls for brothel users to be named and shamed - Longford Today

    21 May 2010
    By Liam Cosgrove

"We are 21 years in Ireland and we have never heard a judge make those sorts of comments before."
The words of Ruhama's Geraldine Rowley following calls by Judge John Neilan for clients who access Longford's sex trade to be named and shamed.

It came after last week's appearance in court of 22-year-old Romanian national *name removed* who came before Longford District Court charged with organising prostitution in Edgeworthstown, Co Longford.

*removed* was ordered by the judge to leave the country and return to Romania along with two other men charged in connection with road traffic offences.

As was reported in last week's Leader, Ms *removed* was arrested and charged two weeks ago after gardai carried out a surveillance led operation in Edgeworthstown for the past month.

In court it was revealed around 20 to 30 male clients had accessed the service after Ms *removed* launched an internet based advertising campaign promising "sexual massages" and other services to would be suitors.

It was this that led Judge Neilan to remark: "The quicker legislation is brought in to enable the publishing of the names and addresses of the people who avail of such services, then the better."

Less than a week on, Ruhama, the organisation charged with providing support services for women affected by sex trafficking, has come out in support of the often outspoken judge.

"We welcome the focus put on responsibility of people fuelling criminality. What we especially welcome is that the judge brought the demand or men in this case who purchased the women into the whole equation. These people have always up until now remained nameless and faceless," Ms Rowley said.

The organisation says that clients have little or no knowledge of how these women get here, how they are controlled, how they are paid and the risks they confont.

In his summing up of the case last week, Judge Neilan put forward a similar view. "You are funded to come to this country and engage in the business that the lady engaged in and you are all being used by people," he told a packed Longford court. "Three thousand euros worth of business was paid in respect of sexual activity at the residence in Edgeworthstown," he said.

Recent studies carried out by Ruhama found 90 per cent of in-house prostitutes are non nationals, coming mainly from eastern Europe. To avoid detection, many are moved from town to town and county to county, a practice which has taken on a raft of new and sinister dimensions according to Ms Rowley.

"When we set up in 1989, prostitution was confined to the major cities only. What we are finding now, and our figures over the last five years show this, is that we are meeting more and more victims of sex trafficking from rural Ireland and that includes Longford," she added.

Isn't it about time at this stage that we grew out of this fucking nonsense and the ridiculous prejudices against prostitution.... yes it's illegal if there are a few working together, it shouldn't be illegal in the first place.

I'd say we're still in the dark ages about it, but actually in the dark ages and for thousands of years prostitution was legal and widespread, even if it was looked down on. Shur didn't jesus himself even have some kinky sexplay with a prostitute's hair.

It was this that led Judge Neilan to remark: "The quicker legislation is brought in to enable the publishing of the names and addresses of the people who avail of such services, then the better."
What does he mean "publishing"? I think this judge should step down as he obviously is totally out of touch with society and reality, and it just goes to show how important it is that prostitution be legalised as soon as possible.

Default Ruhama is just a group of frustrated nuns

I've said it here before and I will say it again Ruhama is just a group of frustrated nuns, who would'nt get a ride off a priest.

Lets face it Ruhama was initially set up as an out reach project to help girls working the streets.

Lets face it the street action in Dublin has dropped alarmingly over the last 10 years.

With hardly anyone working the streets, they have had to reinvent themselves, to keep getting the generous Govt grants (when was the last time you seen a street collection for Ruhama), and keep themselves in plus offices.

Cue the Traffiked women who evil Irish men are abusing. They have exaggerated the problem totally.

In my personal experiences of visiting escorts over many the years I have yet to meet the "Frightened traffiked woman type" most of the girls are sound business women with a cheery disposition

Ruhama are actually helping trafficking to continue by claiming most escorts are trafficked. In fact its the other way around in that most escorts are not trafficked. We had two cases lately where ppl were jailed for running brothels yet ,and according to the police this is, no trafficking was involved in these cases. Ruhamas gross exaggeration is contributing to the problem.

Clients to be named and shamed?? Interesting. Should add a couple hundred more male siocides a year. And what's more interesting is that these Ruhama muppets might actually know people, unawares that they themselves use escorts. What a dumb bunch of muppets.

Oh definitely... it has almost nothing to do with Ruhama wanting to save girls who might actually be in trouble because Ruhama wouldn't have a flipping clue how to even start trying to do that. It has everything to do with Ruhama wanting trying to control things and express their disgust at people having sex, even if they don't admit it to themselves that that's the real reason.

It's about Ruhama trying to stop women from doing what they want themselves with their own bodies. It's an instinctive thing, I think, for women to hate other women who are "slutty" or getting a lot of sex.

Have you ever seen an extremely hot girl that you really wanted and yet for some reason can't have, and you get angry and jealous and frustrated? But then you just have to let it go and have a wank at home maybe. These people won't let it go. These people and others get these feelings as well, so they try their very best to exhert as much control and power as they can on the situation.

Their opinions of sex are all so artificial and unnatural and unhealthy. They don't even have to get sex, just to think of sex in a natural and ordinary way, accept that we should in fact all be naked all the time and that sex is a really natural thing. Then they wouldn't get so hung up over this sort of thing and just leave people alone.

Legislation to allow people who are availing if a legally provided service to have their names and addresses published???

Better still 2 mods have replied to the thread and ignored it. So i presume now we can print names as we wish
