Default 70 cent for a plastic bag ???????

Just thought I would throw this out to the forum, possibly get fuck all replies.

Dunnes Stores have to my knowledge stopped providing the flimsy 22 cent plastic bags.

They only do the thicker plastic one which they are now charging 70 cent for up from 35 Cent.

(Tesco, Lidl and Aldi are still charging 35 cent for the heavy plastic bag).

Dunnes also do a material bag for 70 cent, I alsways now ask for the material bag as a I reckon it costs them more to buy them in so why should I pay the 70 for a plastic one.

I have asked several manager types in a city centre Dunnes and to be honest they are clueless with replies like "maybe it's the bag levy" etc.

I recall Dunnes had a recent court case with the Revenue over disputed bag levy collections so it may be something from that, it's not one of those things keeping me up at night but I would like to know the reason for the hike.

    Any suggestions ?

    Reuse the old bags?

“I wish you wouldn’t keep appearing and vanishing so suddenly; you make one quite giddy!”
“All right,” said the Cat; and this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin, which remained some time after the rest of it had gone.

Yes I agree that is a good idea.

But 99 times out of a hundred I don't have a bag on my person to re-use.

70 cent is still taking the piss

Just buy one of the big tesco bags and have them in your car all the time. That way you don't have to buy a new one every time. Even though you have to pay for the bags when you need them at least their alot better than the free paper bags you get in some shops.

The government plastic bag levy only comes into effect if you charge less than 70c for one, hence why they increased their prices, they are as LJ pointed out in dispute with the government over duties owed so as an up yours they increased their prices on the heavy plastic bag but reduced them on the re-useable ones so they don't have to pay any levies. I for one think it's a great thing, we ahould all be re-using our bags anyway..

Cheers Anon that's a very logical explanation.
I was'nt aware of the 70 cent threshold.

So if Tesco sells a bag for 35 cent they are making 13 cent as the Govt takes 22 cent back.
Whereas Dunnes can pocket the full 70 cent.

Very smart, very smart indeed (for dunnes)

Less the manufaturing cost of the bag but definitely a win-win situation for them..

Yeah but its supriseing how you get used to the reuseable ones. Still find it strange when I go up north for some boos to see people wasteing all the plastic bags in the supermarkets . Everything wrapped about four times. In other countries people take the likes of cereal out of the cardboard at the checkouts and leave it behind them . Saves the cost of recycleing I suppose

Default The ppl gave them an excuse to do it

It wasnt long ago that you would see plastic bags blowing all over the streets in the wind. I think its a good idea but not that much.
