I think hooker is a derogitory term much like brazer, escort is a much softer word, much more pleasant, just like most of the ladies.
If escort reminds you of being escorted by the gardai maybe you need to look closer at the issue not the word

When you say hooker I associate the word with street girls. To people who are outside of this circle they probably would describe women in the sex industry as hookers or prostitutes. They would class them all the same.I couldn't see people referring to them as escorts. It's different for us as we know the difference between a street girl and an escort. Their all escorts who advertise on this site. But theres a few I would describe as courtesans
