Basically it was a dumping ground for freed African-Americans, a colony under the American Colonization Society which declared independence in 1847. The problem of freed slaves was to be solved by exporting them, because "they never could amalgamate with the free whites of this country"......hint of the old Enoch Powells there. The Ethiopian Empire (Abyssinia) was the only indigenous black African country that resisted European colonisation, Liberia being the creation of white Americans.
